Our Education Programs

At Empowering Korean Immigrants (EKI), we are committed to supporting Korean immigrant families by providing accessible, high-quality educational programs for children and youth. Our programs are designed to foster language development, confidence, and a sense of belonging within the community.

We offer a variety of online, one-on-one and small group classes tailored to each student’s needs and level. Our main programs include:

English Tutoring Program

Our English Tutoring Program focuses on building strong foundational and academic English skills in a supportive, one-on-one learning environment.

Each session is typically 60 minutes and may include:

  • Reading comprehension using grade-appropriate texts

  • Vocabulary development and usage

  • Grammar instruction and practice

  • Structured writing activities (paragraphs, short essays, responses)

  • Speaking practice through discussions, prompts, and guided conversation

Lessons are personalized based on an initial level check and ongoing progress. Tutors adjust materials weekly to match the student’s school curriculum and individual needs. Regular feedback is provided to help track improvement in key skill areas.

Book Reading Program

The Book Reading Program aims to develop reading fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking skills through guided reading.

Each session may include:

  • Reading aloud with tutor support

  • Comprehension questions (both verbal and written)

  • Vocabulary exploration from the text

  • Discussion of themes, characters, and personal connections

  • Follow-up activities such as summaries or creative responses

This program helps students build confidence in reading while encouraging a deeper engagement with texts.

Korean Language Program

Our Korean Language Program is designed especially for second-generation Korean children who want to improve their Korean while strengthening their cultural identity.

Each session includes:

  • Basic vocabulary and sentence structure

  • Reading and writing in Hangul

  • Speaking and listening practice through conversation

  • Themed lessons (e.g., family, school, culture, daily life)

  • Interactive activities to reinforce understanding

Lessons are adapted for beginners to intermediate learners, with a strong focus on making students feel comfortable using Korean in everyday contexts.

Program Approach

  • All classes are held once per week (60 minutes) via Google Meet

  • Sessions are conducted one-on-one or in small groups

  • Students are matched with trained volunteers based on their level and needs

  • Tutors prepare materials weekly and adjust lessons based on progress

  • A level check is conducted in the first session to personalize learning

  • Periodic progress updates may be shared with families

Our goal is to create a consistent, engaging, and supportive learning environment where students can grow academically while feeling seen, supported, and connected.

“처음에는 아이가 영어로 말하는 걸 많이 부담스러워했는데, 수업을 꾸준히 들으면서 점점 자신감이 생겼어요. 선생님께서 아이 눈높이에 맞춰 편하게 이끌어주셔서 너무 감사드립니다.”
